Handwriting .vs. Typing

writing-vs-typingI’ve asked a lot of people which they prefer: handwriting or typing. It usually seems to be split pretty evenly, with one half preferring handwriting while the other half prefer typing. Now this post isn’t going to be me picking a side. Personally I like both, depending on what I’m working on. For fanfiction, I write everything by hand and then type it up after. But for longer projects I like typing them right away.

Now, this wasn’t what I was originally planning on talking about today. But two days ago I sent my laptop off to be fixed and now everything I do gets handwritten first. This isn’t too much of a problem, but I’m hoping my laptop will be back before November 1, when NaNoWriMo begins. Last year I participated in NaNoWriMo and I typed the whole thing, emailing myself the document periodically to make sure I didn’t lose anything (I talked more about this in my post on saving your work).

One of the things I like about NaNoWriMo is that you record your daily word count. This is a little harder to do if you’re writing everything by hand. Not impossible, but harder. I find that with typing I’m able to better keep up with my ideas as I get them. Writing by hand, sometimes the words come and I can’t get them on the page fast enough. This usually results in my writing looking like a stereotypical doctor’s handwriting. So, when it comes to recording your ideas, I find there is a certain freedom to typing that you don’t get when handwriting.

However, this isn’t to say typing is better as handwriting offers its own sense of freedom. By handwriting everything you can always keep it with you. It is very rare I will go somewhere without one of my fanfiction notebooks in my bag. This allows me to work on it at any time, no matter where I am. This isn’t something I can do if I type everything as I don’t always bring my laptop with me.

This is why I usually enjoy both handwriting and typing about the same, depending on the project. Though, I’m not going to lie, I’ll enjoy it even more when I have the option of whether to type or hand write. When I can type up my blog posts right away rather than write them and hope I can access a computer to post it on time, like I was unable to do today.

But I want to know what you guys think! Which do you prefer, handwriting or typing?

  1. Love, love, love handwriting!! Only wish I didn’t have to make the time to transfer to type. I’m an old soul. Do you have a certain pen you love, too? I do – I’m sort of a lunatic about that stuff. 🙂

Have a great day, Jen C!
